And the winner is…

We are excited to announce that Hubbard House of Jacksonville, Florida is the recipient of the 2010 We Inspire grant program.

Hubbard House has been providing shelter and outreach services for domestic violence victims and their families since 1976. They will receive up to $75,000 worth of creative marketing services including strategy development, a new brand identity, new print collateral, a new website and custom photography.

Although We Inspire is a national grant program, our selection process was never about the geographical location of the organization or the size of the operating budget. It came down to inspiration.

We were looking for an organization that was open to collaboration. Someone who was passionate about their cause. Someone who would inspire us. In the end, we were surprised to find this amazing non-profit in our own backyard.

When we got off the phone with Hubbard House — we had goose bumps. They pointed out that domestic violence is more than a personal issue. If violence is in the home, it is in the community. This is when we saw the potential for a huge ripple effect.

We know that the challenges of Hubbard House will challenge us. Domestic violence is a unique cause. How do we educate victims about an issue that is so sensitive? How do we help the community understand that domestic violence affects everyone? How do we show these stories through photography without putting victims and their families at risk?

We don’t have immediate answers, yet this is where the collaboration comes in. The “We” in We Inspire is not just Emily, Tiffany and Fred. The “We” represents everyone involved — the staff at Hubbard House, their board, their supporters, the survivors, the victims, their families and their communities. Together, we will begin a yearlong journey, as we ask questions and explore options. We will focus on the goals of the organization, and use design as a vehicle to overcome their challenges.

We inspire… through design.

Congratulations to the Hubbard House and the We-Inspire team! Look forward to seeing the changes over the next year, and the effect that good design has on the organization. Good luck!

Think Globally – Act Locally. What a wonderful opportunity to support a hometown, non-profit organization through the power of design. I look forward to seeing the transformation. You inspire!

All of the finalists had strong applications, and it was a hard decision to make. What made Hubbard House stand out was their emphasis that the personal cause of domestic violence affects the whole community. They also understood that collaboration comes from teamwork. We’re not going in with the answers, nor do we intend to just tell them what to do. We will discover the solutions together, working side by side.

Excellent choice, guys. I’m excited to see what you learn from the challenges HH works to overcome. As well as the work you create to help overcome their challenges. Cheers!
